About

This is a funny and touching collection of stories set in a simpler time of village life when the town square was also the mayor. It's best desribed by the line: "I lived in a town that was so small we taught our children Driver's Ed and Sex Ed out of the same car." Honestly, this book is more fun that that time in Clown Class 101 at the Chautauqua Institute where the author taught a writer's course when the instructor's pants really did catch on fire. As a resident of rural communities all his life and a writer with a keen eye for the obvious, in this book William focuses on quirky characters and quaint events in small towns which you seldom see in the city. Like hobo camps and outhouses. Like drive-in-theatres and a drive-thru bakery where customers enter through the front window...accidentally. Like ponds where they fish using dynamite. and really well-organized garbage dumps. There's the pajama-clad jewelery store robber who stole an armful of cuckoo clocks. There's the guy who set fire to himself and his dog while trying to remove a tick. There's the wisdom of three guys named Bob at the Belmont Hotel: "The insurance companies should give us a rebate while we're drinking cause legally, we can't drink and drive, eh?" Memorable characters come to life on these pages like bookies and misfits, Jehovah Witnesses and hostage-takers, a dog that played third base and ducks that could crap on cue. Growing up in Dain City, which was barely big enough to be a village, William's little world was weird. Then once he moved and did grow up he wore that "weird" like a badge of honour.
