When a reporter arrives at the Acme Garment Factory, twelve-year-old Emily must decide whether to risk the job her family desperately needs her to keep, or to provide information about the terrible factory conditions. The story is interspersed with historical information and archival photographs documenting child labor, slums, and social conditions in the early twentieth century.
