When single Mom Lucy Van Alstyne moves into Winnipeg's Have-a-Life housing project - known as Half-a-Life to those who call it home - she becomes fast friends with feisty, eccentric Lish, the frequent subject of the resident rumour mill. Lucy soon finds herself the subject of neighbourly speculation too, as the denizens of Half-a-Life gossip about the paternity of her son, Dill. If only Lucy knew who the father actually was, she'd put them out of their misery. Lish, too, pines for the father of her twins, a fire-eating busker who came through town a few years back. When Lish decides they should head to Colorado to find him, she and Lucy borrow a van held together with coathangers and electrical tape, load it up with clothes, toys, food, and kids, and hit the road. Lucy's not sure they'll ever find the fire-eater, but there's no way she can know that this just might be the summer of her amazing luck.
